For February 3rd, 2022, it is an event in Japan called せつぶん(se tsu bu n).
We celebrate the coming of spring, even though it is still cold.
On that day, we throw away beans with saying “おにはそと,ふくはうち (oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi) ”.
(oni wa soto desu.) (oni=devils, soto=outside)
(fuku wa uchi desu.) (fuku=happiness, uchi=inside)
(omit desu, because of the casual way.)
It means “Devils out! Happiness in”.
Throwing the soybeans, represents getting rid of bad luck and welcoming good luck.
In addition, we eat beans as numbers as their age and eat “えほうまき (Ehoumaki) ” that is thick sushi roll.
And when eating えほうまき (Ehoumaki), look in the year’s good luck direction, and eat quietly while making a wish.
It is regarded as good thing to eat えほうまき (Ehoumaki) in Setsubun.
Enjoy Japanese culture!!
